Dietary advice and smoking cessation
Healthy mouths reflect a healthy body but on the flip side, unhealthy diets and lifestyles can have a detrimental affect on your mouth, teeth and gums, causing decay, erosion, gum disease and bad breath.
Cutting down on sugary drinks, sweets and food and drinks that are high in acid, such as fruit and fruit juices, can help prevent decay and stop acid erosion from damaging tooth enamel, which can lead to pain and sensitivity.
Smokers, those with diabetes and obese and overweight people are more likely to suffer from gum disease - the single biggest cause of tooth loss. Gum disease affects three out of four adults and more than half of all teenagers. It causes toothache, sensitivity, bad breath and bleeding gums and has also been linked to heart disease, bacterial lung infections, premature births and strokes. The good news is that with regular visits to your dentist and a meticulous dental hygiene routine at home, gum disease is easily controlled.
We have plenty of dietary tips for both adults and children, which are ideal for maintaining healthy mouths and prolonging the life of your teeth. We can also offer advice on giving up smoking, which causes bad breath, tooth staining, gum disease, tooth loss and mouth cancer. Please ask us at your next appointment or give us a call on the practice number, we would be only too happy to help.
