COVID-19 Update May 2020

COVID-19 Update – The Story So Far

We always do our best to keep our valued patients updated with what’s happening at Glendair Dental Practice. Most of you will have been following the regular COVID-19 updates on our Facebook page, which you can see here. For those of you that may not be on social media, or would just like to read a complete update – you’re in the right place.

In this post we will be recounting the past few months of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and what this has meant for Glendair Dental, including the facial aesthetics side

When the news of the COVID-19 outbreak started circulating, Glendair began to continuously monitor the ever-changing guidelines. Our strict hygiene and cleaning protocols were reinforced on a daily basis to keep the practice clean and disinfected to the highest standards possible.

This was nothing new for us. We already adhere to the best practice guidelines at all times. We follow strict protocols to sterilise all dental instruments used during treatment. In addition, all our team members are trained in cross-infection and routine hand washing.

At this uncertain time, we thanked the continued loyalty and trust of our patients. It was time to put into place an action plan to assure patients still wanting to visit the practice. For anyone over the age of 70 or medically compromised, we put in place measures for out of hours appointments. We put in procedures to ask every patient entering the building if they had any symptoms or had been in contact with anyone who had been abroad. We also posted out dental care products with guidance on how to look after your oral health for those that were self-isolating.

During this time, we also put out a letter to our patients:

Our patients are not just patients, they’re part of the Glendair family and families have to pull together during difficult and uncertain times.

So if any of our patients who are age 70 and over need any assistance with shopping, collecting prescriptions or posting letters, we will do our very best to help.

UK Goes into Lockdown

On the 23rd March, it was time for change. The UK was put into lockdown. With confirmation from the Chief Dental Officer, we reduced our service to telephone and email for emergencies only. It was not a decision we took took lightly. It was our responsibility to protect our patients, our team and our families from COVID-19.

Weeks turned into months. Principal dentist Matthew Lamb worked diligently to ensure patients in pain received the highest level of patient care despite the circumstances. This meant offering advice, prescribing pain relief or antibiotics and delivering temporary filling or crown re-fixing kits. Matt also referred to the Urgent Dental Care Centres when necessary.

We donated our unused hand sanitiser and other personal protective equipment to care homes and hospices. Our oxygen supply went to the NHS.

Meanwhile, the Glendair Team got their fundraising hats on. They created lots of different challenges to raise money for frontline NHS workers!

In April, we introduced Virtual Consultations for dental treatments and facial aesthetics treatments. For registered or new patients, this allows you to discover the ways we can help, all from the comfort of your own home. We’ve also set up VIP priority lists to organise patients who need or wish to be seen as soon as possible.

we offer video chats

May 2020 Update

As the COVID-19 government advice started to change again, the dental team went to the practice one by one to be fitted with respirator face masks on the 7th May.

Our dentist Cate kindly filmed a video to show you to expect the team to look like during your appointment when it is finally safe for us to reopen.

This is just one of the steps we are undertaking to protect our team and patients. Practice managers Bev and Ruth have been working tirelessly with Matt, putting together new operating procedures. We have to adapt the practice to ensure it’s as safe as possible by reducing the risk of infection. We have invested in various anti-viral equipment for the reception area and surgeries, which we will introduce you to as and when it’s set up.

To be notified of the updates as they are happening, stay in touch with us on social media. As the guidance may vary for different treatments, we advise you follow our Dental Facebook page and our Facial Aesthetics Facebook page. We are hoping to see you all again very soon now in person.

As a final message for now, we want to let you know that Glendair has and always will have your safety at the heart of everything we do. If you have any concerns or questions, please let us know.

Glendair Raise £879 for Frontline NHS Workers During Coronavirus Crisis

Glendair Dental Practice Raise £879 in Virtual Land’s End to John O’Groats Challenge to Provide Frontline NHS Workers with Hot Meals During Coronavirus Crisis

Last month the team at Glendair Dental Practice were set a lockdown challenge. During the allowance to exercise per day, the aim was to complete enough miles between the team to travel virtually from Land’s End to John o’ Groats.

The challenge, in which the journey in question traditionally takes 874 miles, was enthusiastically accepted, with Glendair Dental Practice donating £1 per every mile completed.

Over the next few weeks, each member of the team walked, jogged, ran, cycled (and even canoed!) in an effort to record as many miles as possible.

Dentist and advanced facial aesthetics practitioner Cate said of her experience, “As a team, we are really competitive! My partner, Garry, suggested we should set our old bike Tacx up, which is essentially a frame that supports the back wheel of a normal bike so that it can be used as a stationary exercise bike, indoors or outdoors.

I jumped at the chance as I figured that if I spent an hour on it, I could in theory cover more miles. I set a 30 minute timer on my phone and used a bluetooth speaker to play music through, choosing heavy rock tune to motivate me. As we neared the target miles, I was driven to keep going!”

On the seventeenth day, the Glendair team had managed to travel enough miles in the local area to finally reach 878.8 miles!

One of the main contributors to the team effort was hygiene therapist Sara, who on Day 15 ran an astonishing 21.4 miles which is nearly a whole marathon! Sara said, “I really enjoyed the challenge – I like exercise so this was right up my street. As the gyms a re closed this was a great way to stay both physically and mentally fit.

My usual runs are about 5 miles, but as this was an amazing cause I thought I’d push myself and racking up the miles gave me a great sense of achievement! I’m really proud of the whole team.”

The money raised was donated to the #FeedNHS project, a fundraising campaign spearheaded by actor Damian Lewis in conjunction with restaurant chain LEON, to provide hot, healthy meals for frontline NHS workers during the coronavirus crisis.

Glendair Dental Practice said: “We cannot thank our incredible NHS enough for the brilliant work they do every single day! If you would like to donate, please visit: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/feednhs

The Home Straight – Invisalign Results!

With the end of my Invisalign treatment in sight, I was so pleased with the results so far. After my 15th aligner my teeth were all straight but still had larger gaps between them. When I saw Matt he gave me my final lot of aligners that are designed to pull my teeth back together to close the gaps.

I noticed straight away that the gaps had started to close up and after 4 weeks they looked great, just in time for my wedding day. I didn’t even need to wear my 18th aligner!

After my 17th aligner I had the blobs of composite removed and impressions taken for a retainer. Photos were also taken at this visit.

My retainers were fitted 2 weeks later and I wear these every night. As I’ve learnt from past experience, if you don’t wear your retainers the teeth will move back.

I’m so grateful to Matt as I’m really happy with my smile now. Loads of people have complimented me on how good they look.

Sara Invisalign Results

It can be a bit a bit frustrating having to take them out every time you eat, but you get used to it and after a week or so it just seems normal.

It’s been a quick process and I’m really happy with the results, I can’t stop smiling! If you’re thinking about Invisalign I’d 100% recommend it. Call us today to book in on 01773 832164 for a free Smile Audit to check your suitability!

Tray 12-14

Before starting my 12th tray I had to have an appointment with Matt again. At this visit he looked to see how things were going, ensuring the teeth were moving into position as they should be.  At this visit I also needed more “interproximal reduction” (little bits polishing off the side of some teeth to allow them space to move). Before Matt did this he put a retractor in my mouth to move my lips out of the way, although this looks a bit strange it’s totally comfortable and nothing to worry about.  After about 5 minutes and a bit of water the interproximal reductions was finished, the cold water was slightly sensitive but not painful. It was a bit of a shock looking in the mirror afterward as my bottom teeth looked really happy.

Sara teeth

I know this is only short term & as the teeth move into line the gaps will close. Over the next few weeks I have noticed a lot more food trapping between my teeth, so I keep a TePe brush in my handbag at all times.

TePe Interdental Brushes

I also found this set of trays caused my mouth to ache the most, I’ve not needed painkillers but I have been aware of discomfort for a few days after changing each tray. The discomfort is all worth it though, as I’m writing this I am wearing tray number 14 and I’m totally amazed at the results so far! My teeth are now practically straight & I can really start to see how the end result will soon look…… bring on the next few aligners!!!

Trays 2-5

After the first 2 weeks Matt saw me again, he asked if I had any issues to which I had none, wearing the trays for the recommended 22 hours a day has been much easier than I anticipated. At this visit Matt shaved a little off the side of one of my teeth which was completely painless, this bit of space gives room for the teeth to move into as they straighten out. Once this was done he placed the second tray in for me. Matt then provided me with the next 2 trays to change myself at home on 2 week intervals. I have made it through trays 2 to 5 without much discomfort. I’m finding the process relatively simple and it hasn’t affected my daily life much and the time is flying by. I have had quite a few patients talk about orthodontics to me and when I tell them that I’m wearing Invisalign they are really shocked as they hadn’t even noticed, which is great! I feel confident talking and smiling knowing that they are hardly visible.

Trays 5-11

Following completion of the 5th tray, it was time for another appointment with Matt, there was no more treatment required yet; just a check to see if the teeth were moving as they should and that I had no issues such as lost composite achievements (the little white filling I mentioned earlier). The visit was slightly delayed as I was on holiday so I had been wearing tray number 5 for 3 weeks rather than 2. I had no issues smiling on my holiday photos and when I look at them I don’t even notice the aligners. I can really tell my teeth have started to move, I have even changed the size of inter-dental brushes I use to clean in between, I am really happy with the results so far and can’t wait for my journey to continue. I have been a bit naughty with my aligners though but have definitely learned my lesson. As we have been experiencing a heat wave I thought the odd glass of sugar free orange wouldn’t effect anything if I just left my tray in. I was wrong! It stained them yellow, it was hardly visible when I had them in but they looked rather nasty when I took them out. I couldn’t wait to change in to my next set, that’s a mistake I will not be making again!

Receiving My Invisalign Trays! | Sara’s Invisalign PART 3

Tray 1

The practice received my trays about 2 weeks later, I was really happy at how quickly they arrived. I had a short 30 minute appointment with Matt where he attached some small white filling on the sides of some teeth to which my Invisalign fit around (these are removed after treatment). There was no discomfort at all during this treatment just a retraction screen holding my lips out the way at a little water in my mouth. Once Matt had attached the bits of white filling he then put my first sets of trays in for me. He gave me my instructions on wearing the aligners along with a couple of tray boxes, one for the current tray and one for the previous tray as I move through my treatment. He also gave me a ‘chewie’, basically a little bit of plastic to chew on 20 minutes a day to help set the aligners and aid tooth movement.

By the evening my teeth were a little achy but nothing too terrible. My teeth felt more painful when the trays were out so I actually liked having them in, it’s a good job really as I will be wearing them for 22 hours a day! For the first couple of days it was a bit strange having something constantly in my mouth and I was definitely aware of them when I was talking. I noticed I had a slight lisp and was also spitting a bit as I spoke. This was all resolved on about day 3, by then I hardly noticed I was wearing them.

Sara Trays

It was no bother taking them out to eat and drink then brushing and flossing before putting them back in. I had to reduce the amount I snacked though to ensure I was wearing the tray enough. I made sure I upped the calories in my meals so that I was feeling more full and not tempted to snack. I kept a toothbrush, mini tooth paste and floss in my bag so I could give my teeth a clean if I went out for meals. I changed my morning routine up so that I brushed after breakfast rather than before, I also used the time I was having breakfast to give my aligners a clean in some Retainer Brite ensuring they were fresh for the day ahead.

X-Rays, Impressions & ClinCheck | Sara’s Invisalign Diary PART 2

Read Part One of Sara’s Invisalign Diary HERE!

Why I Chose Invisalign

The desired cosmetic improvement I want can be achieved by having the Invisalign treatment, I decided to go with this option over fixed braces like I had previously had. The treatment requires less time in the dental chair and also fewer appointments to have things altered as most of the work is just done by swapping the trays at home. The fact they are less noticeable was also a great selling point. As part of my job I generally do quite a lot of talking so the thought of brackets and wires catching my lip deterred me from the fixed brace alternative. I know that having the treatment will not only improve the appearance but it will also make life easier when it comes to keeping this clean.

The Journey Begins

Today is the start of my Invisalign journey which I’m excited to begin and I know I will be well looked after by Matt here at Glendair.

Matt training Sara

My initial appointment consisted of an exam to ensure I was suitable for the treatment, I had a recent X-ray on record so another one wasn’t necessary for me but will likely be something you would need before embarking on the treatment. Matt gave me his expert advice and told me his expectations for my treatment
and also asked me what I wanted and expected as the final result. I then had some photos taken for the “before” pictures and some impressions of my top and bottom teeth.

My impressions were then sent of to the Invisalign lab and a few weeks later my ClinCheck came back. This is a computer generated animation in which Matt showed me how my teeth would move throughout treatment tray by tray. It was fascinating to watch and once I had seen what the final result would look like I couldn’t wait to start. Matt then approved the treatment and instructed the lab to start manufacturing the trays!

Our Hygiene Therapist Sara Begins her Invisalign Treatment!

Hello, my name is Sara and most patients will recognise me as the Hygiene Therapist here at Glendair!

As part of my Invisalign treatment I have agreed to write a blog, hopefully it will shed a little light on the Invisalign process for anybody considering the treatment.

It seems only right to start with why I wanted the treatment in the first place. As a young teen my teeth were quite wonky, particularity the bottom ones and like most people my age I had the typical train track braces for around 18 months. When my braces were removed the results were amazing, perfect straight teeth, I was delighted. After treatment was complete I was provided with a retainer and instructions to wear it at night for the next 6 months. After this time period I stopped wearing it which I now know was a massive mistake.

Gradually over the years my teeth started to move back and my bottom front teeth became crowded again. At first this didn’t bother me as it was my bottom teeth they weren’t as noticeable, that was until one particular holiday photo…

It was a once in a lifetime trip to Bali where we went to a temple that was overrun with monkeys, and what a great photo I got, a monkey right on the top of my head, well I say great photo… all except from my clearly visible lower teeth. One of the bottom teeth was pushed back due the crowding and it actually looked like I had a front tooth missing. Which is not a good look at any age never mind in your early 20’s.

Sara with Monkey

Since this day I have always been quite concious of my smile and over the past few years I have also noticed some minor movement in one of my top teeth as well. I knew I wanted some sort of orthodontic treatment to correct them but wasn’t sure which would be the best method for me. I am dental therapist but had limited knowledge on the appropriate method to straighten my teeth so that was where Matt came in.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Again, this is one of those questions where the answer can vary from person to person as everyone it so different! We usually advise that the most commonly used dermal fillers last from between 6 to 12 months.

There are some available that last even longer than these and these require further specialist training.

At your free consultation we will be able to advise further and keep and eye on your progress through review appointments.
