Glendair Raise £879 for Frontline NHS Workers During Coronavirus Crisis
Glendair Dental Practice Raise £879 in Virtual Land’s End to John O’Groats Challenge to Provide Frontline NHS Workers with Hot Meals During Coronavirus Crisis
Last month the team at Glendair Dental Practice were set a lockdown challenge. During the allowance to exercise per day, the aim was to complete enough miles between the team to travel virtually from Land’s End to John o’ Groats.
The challenge, in which the journey in question traditionally takes 874 miles, was enthusiastically accepted, with Glendair Dental Practice donating £1 per every mile completed.
Over the next few weeks, each member of the team walked, jogged, ran, cycled (and even canoed!) in an effort to record as many miles as possible.
Dentist and advanced facial aesthetics practitioner Cate said of her experience, “As a team, we are really competitive! My partner, Garry, suggested we should set our old bike Tacx up, which is essentially a frame that supports the back wheel of a normal bike so that it can be used as a stationary exercise bike, indoors or outdoors.
I jumped at the chance as I figured that if I spent an hour on it, I could in theory cover more miles. I set a 30 minute timer on my phone and used a bluetooth speaker to play music through, choosing heavy rock tune to motivate me. As we neared the target miles, I was driven to keep going!”
On the seventeenth day, the Glendair team had managed to travel enough miles in the local area to finally reach 878.8 miles!
One of the main contributors to the team effort was hygiene therapist Sara, who on Day 15 ran an astonishing 21.4 miles which is nearly a whole marathon! Sara said, “I really enjoyed the challenge – I like exercise so this was right up my street. As the gyms a re closed this was a great way to stay both physically and mentally fit.
My usual runs are about 5 miles, but as this was an amazing cause I thought I’d push myself and racking up the miles gave me a great sense of achievement! I’m really proud of the whole team.”
The money raised was donated to the #FeedNHS project, a fundraising campaign spearheaded by actor Damian Lewis in conjunction with restaurant chain LEON, to provide hot, healthy meals for frontline NHS workers during the coronavirus crisis.
Glendair Dental Practice said: “We cannot thank our incredible NHS enough for the brilliant work they do every single day! If you would like to donate, please visit: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/feednhs”
