The Home Straight – Invisalign Results!

With the end of my Invisalign treatment in sight, I was so pleased with the results so far. After my 15th aligner my teeth were all straight but still had larger gaps between them. When I saw Matt he gave me my final lot of aligners that are designed to pull my teeth back together to close the gaps.

I noticed straight away that the gaps had started to close up and after 4 weeks they looked great, just in time for my wedding day. I didn’t even need to wear my 18th aligner!

After my 17th aligner I had the blobs of composite removed and impressions taken for a retainer. Photos were also taken at this visit.

My retainers were fitted 2 weeks later and I wear these every night. As I’ve learnt from past experience, if you don’t wear your retainers the teeth will move back.

I’m so grateful to Matt as I’m really happy with my smile now. Loads of people have complimented me on how good they look.

Sara Invisalign Results

It can be a bit a bit frustrating having to take them out every time you eat, but you get used to it and after a week or so it just seems normal.

It’s been a quick process and I’m really happy with the results, I can’t stop smiling! If you’re thinking about Invisalign I’d 100% recommend it. Call us today to book in on 01773 832164 for a free Smile Audit to check your suitability!

Tray 12-14

Before starting my 12th tray I had to have an appointment with Matt again. At this visit he looked to see how things were going, ensuring the teeth were moving into position as they should be.  At this visit I also needed more “interproximal reduction” (little bits polishing off the side of some teeth to allow them space to move). Before Matt did this he put a retractor in my mouth to move my lips out of the way, although this looks a bit strange it’s totally comfortable and nothing to worry about.  After about 5 minutes and a bit of water the interproximal reductions was finished, the cold water was slightly sensitive but not painful. It was a bit of a shock looking in the mirror afterward as my bottom teeth looked really happy.

I know this is only short term & as the teeth move into line the gaps will close. Over the next few weeks I have noticed a lot more food trapping between my teeth, so I keep a TePe brush in my handbag at all times.

I also found this set of trays caused my mouth to ache the most, I’ve not needed painkillers but I have been aware of discomfort for a few days after changing each tray. The discomfort is all worth it though, as I’m writing this I am wearing tray number 14 and I’m totally amazed at the results so far! My teeth are now practically straight & I can really start to see how the end result will soon look…… bring on the next few aligners!!!

Trays 2-5

After the first 2 weeks Matt saw me again, he asked if I had any issues to which I had none, wearing the trays for the recommended 22 hours a day has been much easier than I anticipated. At this visit Matt shaved a little off the side of one of my teeth which was completely painless, this bit of space gives room for the teeth to move into as they straighten out. Once this was done he placed the second tray in for me. Matt then provided me with the next 2 trays to change myself at home on 2 week intervals. I have made it through trays 2 to 5 without much discomfort. I’m finding the process relatively simple and it hasn’t affected my daily life much and the time is flying by. I have had quite a few patients talk about orthodontics to me and when I tell them that I’m wearing Invisalign they are really shocked as they hadn’t even noticed, which is great! I feel confident talking and smiling knowing that they are hardly visible.

Trays 5-11

Following completion of the 5th tray, it was time for another appointment with Matt, there was no more treatment required yet; just a check to see if the teeth were moving as they should and that I had no issues such as lost composite achievements (the little white filling I mentioned earlier). The visit was slightly delayed as I was on holiday so I had been wearing tray number 5 for 3 weeks rather than 2. I had no issues smiling on my holiday photos and when I look at them I don’t even notice the aligners. I can really tell my teeth have started to move, I have even changed the size of inter-dental brushes I use to clean in between, I am really happy with the results so far and can’t wait for my journey to continue. I have been a bit naughty with my aligners though but have definitely learned my lesson. As we have been experiencing a heat wave I thought the odd glass of sugar free orange wouldn’t effect anything if I just left my tray in. I was wrong! It stained them yellow, it was hardly visible when I had them in but they looked rather nasty when I took them out. I couldn’t wait to change in to my next set, that’s a mistake I will not be making again!

Tray 1

The practice received my trays about 2 weeks later, I was really happy at how quickly they arrived. I had a short 30 minute appointment with Matt where he attached some small white filling on the sides of some teeth to which my Invisalign fit around (these are removed after treatment). There was no discomfort at all during this treatment just a retraction screen holding my lips out the way at a little water in my mouth. Once Matt had attached the bits of white filling he then put my first sets of trays in for me. He gave me my instructions on wearing the aligners along with a couple of tray boxes, one for the current tray and one for the previous tray as I move through my treatment. He also gave me a ‘chewie’, basically a little bit of plastic to chew on 20 minutes a day to help set the aligners and aid tooth movement.

By the evening my teeth were a little achy but nothing too terrible. My teeth felt more painful when the trays were out so I actually liked having them in, it’s a good job really as I will be wearing them for 22 hours a day! For the first couple of days it was a bit strange having something constantly in my mouth and I was definitely aware of them when I was talking. I noticed I had a slight lisp and was also spitting a bit as I spoke. This was all resolved on about day 3, by then I hardly noticed I was wearing them.

Sara Trays

It was no bother taking them out to eat and drink then brushing and flossing before putting them back in. I had to reduce the amount I snacked though to ensure I was wearing the tray enough. I made sure I upped the calories in my meals so that I was feeling more full and not tempted to snack. I kept a toothbrush, mini tooth paste and floss in my bag so I could give my teeth a clean if I went out for meals. I changed my morning routine up so that I brushed after breakfast rather than before, I also used the time I was having breakfast to give my aligners a clean in some Retainer Brite ensuring they were fresh for the day ahead.

Hints and tips to help you get the most from your Invisalign braces

If you’re interested in Invisalign braces or you’re currently wearing these clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth, we’ve put together some helpful hints and tips shared by Invisalign patients to help you get the most from your treatment:

  1. Clean your teeth every time you eat or drink something that isn’t water

One of the big attractions of Invisalign braces is that they can be taken out when you want to clean your teeth. You will still need to clean your teeth after every meal, snack or drink that isn’t water because bacteria can get trapped between the aligner and your teeth otherwise, creating a breeding ground for tooth decay, while what you’ve eaten can potentially stain your aligner; if your aligner is stained, it will lose its almost invisible finish.

  1. Schedule some hygienist appointments for extra cleaning

You might find it helpful to see the dental hygienist more regularly than usual to help keep your teeth extra clean during your treatment.

  1. Invisalign braces can treat complex cases

People often assume that Invisalign is only suitable for straightforward, mild alignment problems. In fact, Invisalign can successfully be used to treat complex orthodontic cases.

  1. Keep two sets of cleaning essentials in your home

Many people find it helpful to keep a toothbrush and other cleaning essentials in the bathroom and the kitchen of their home to make cleaning their teeth and aligner after eating as quick and convenient as possible.

  1. Always carry a travel teeth cleaning kit

As you’ll need to become a pro at cleaning your teeth every time you eat or drink, it’s a good idea to carry a wash bag of teeth cleaning essentials wherever you go so that you can clean your teeth at any time.

  1. Remember a case for your aligners

As part of your travel cleaning kit, try to remember a case for your aligners so that you have somewhere to store then when you’re eating. Beware of wrapping them in a paper serviette if you’re eating out as we’ve heard of people leaving their aligners in restaurants this way.

  1. Set a timer when you take your aligners out to eat

You should wear your Invisalign braces for at least 22 hours a day to enjoy the best results. Set a timer each time you take your aligners out to eat or drink so you can keep track of how much time you’ve gone aligner-free.

  1. Change your aligners before bed

You will need to change your Invisalign aligners once a fortnight. Many patients find it helpful to put take an over-the-counter painkiller, such as Ibuprofen, and put a new aligner in before they go to bed at night. This means that they sleep through the initial hours with each new aligner when the fit can feel tight and the pressure can be uncomfortable.

  1. Wash your hands

Wash your hands before you take your aligners out or put them back in to help protect your mouth from germs.

  1. Rinse your tray in warm water

Before you put a new aligner in, you might find it helpful to wash it under warm water as it will feel more comfortable when it goes into your mouth.
